Mutagenicos 3
Mutagenicos 3
RIYL BO Diddley, Rolling Stones, MFC Chicken. The Spanish trio have finally escaped their garage restraints and are unleashing their other sonic experiences on us. The Spanish trio are playing games with us on the cover of "3", depicted in a Fuzztonian fashion on the great artwork of Mikel Echandi. Alfredo, Santi and Pablo have finally escaped their garage restraints and are unleashing their other sonic experiences on us. Their third album includes Rock'n'Roll - with emphasis on the latter - harmonically propelled Rhythm and Blues ("Idiota"), pianos running amok and swing-loaded saxophones ("He Venido A Buscarte"), and songs that bleed choruses worthy of Argentinian Stones worshippers ("Menos Mal"), and poultry-inspired guitars ‡ la MFC Chicken ("Autocontrol"). There is even a tropical and circus-like cumbia of death ("Cumbia De La Muerte"). A song that makes them soar up to heights not reached in their previous works. Miguel PÈrez "Mitch" on piano and Dani NiÒo (The Limboos) on baritone saxophone help build a solid frame and armour their sound, emerging from the Studios at Casa Mabe, a rural house located in the mountains of La Rioja with David Garrido behind the desk. MutagÈnicos' prose reminds us that we all have asked ourselves more than once: What do they want from me? Starting from that premise, they recite elegant farewells to the charlatans du jour ("Eres El Mejor"), they lay out eloquent pleas for the use of the weekend as shock therapy treatment ("Resetear"), and can move from lowly subjects like Nightclub courtship ("Darlo Todo") to the more elevated levels of theological dissertations with a cynical touch ("ActualiceSu Fe"). They wrap up "3" with a sui generis interpretation of the radio script of "The War of the Worlds": threat from outer space, news bulletins, alien machines and sonic jabber at the mercy of theremin, synthesizer and final delay. MutagÈnicos may add up to three, but this latest album blasts them up to greater heights
